“Rick L. Bollinger Clinician of the Year” AWARD
This is an additional award approved during the 2006 AVASLP Business Meeting to recognize a member of the AVASLP who provides outstanding clinical services to communicatively or swallowing impaired veterans.
The award is entitled the “Rick L. Bollinger Clinician of the Year” Award as a tribute to the first President of the AVASLP. In addition to his contributions as long-time Chief of the Miami VA, a member of the National Audiology/Speech Pathology Field Advisory Council and the Executive Board of the AVASLP, Dr. Bollinger is recognized as a master clinician, teacher, and clinical researcher. His areas of clinical expertise are broad and include voice disorders, language disorders, and dementia. During his tenure at the Miami VA, Dr. Bollinger’s expertise--and his compassion--impacted the lives of hundreds of veterans and their families. Beyond that, his willingness to share his knowledge with colleagues set a standard for other clinicians throughout the VA that will affect veterans’ lives throughout the country. Given that his career focused on the provision of exceptional speech-language pathology services to veterans, we therefore are honoring Dr. Bollinger by naming this award after him.
Nominations for this award are solicited from the AVASLP membership at large and reviewed by the Nominations committee. AVASLP members may nominate a colleague from their own facility or another station. The nominator submits a single-page nomination detailing the nature of the individual’s contribution, the manner in which the contribution is outstanding or unique, and the significance of the contribution.
The criteria for selection would be as follows:
§ The extent to which the nominee demonstrates conduct of exemplary clinical services within VHA, a Department of Defense facility, or other federal facility.
§ The extent to which the individual has developed an innovative program that enhances the practice of speech-language pathology within VHA, the Department of Defense, or other federal facility.
